Governors Island serves as a testing ground for cohabitation and cross-species sociability. In the modern world, while non-humans are increasingly viewed as commodities occupying a human space, this project heightens their agency and provokes a shift in thought to viewing other species as clients or collaborators in architecture. This scenario opens up an exploration of spatial and territorial boundaries between humans and non-humans. Studying the habitats, food, substrate, and movements of species found on GI leads to a scalar study of non-human spaces. The bioplastic material has been manufactured in collaboration with the d.r.a (Center for design research in architecture) lab at Pratt Institute. Material samples, documentation and iterations have been done to achieve desired results. The sheet is folded with the intent to showcase the natural variations in color and texture on the top and bottom surfaces. This iteration introduces a system of bringing hard and soft biomaterials together for a modular unit. Extrusion technology has been proposed to fabricate a core within the house while retaining the building envelope. Upon comparing the applications of robotic arm 3d printers, and gantry-type printers, a robotic arm printer has been proposed. As the printer is around 1100 kilograms, the point of entry has then been mapped along with the movement of the robots to print this structure. The presence of cavities allows the opportunity to fill the structure with material such as sawdust or agro-waste. The thermal mass and cavities would also aid in providing heat to the house through the structure. Physical model casting has been done to explore the challenges that would arise while 3d printing the core on-site. While printing at the edge of the existing beams and roof junctions, modular blocks that are printed on the ground to be assembled in place, are proposed. The project aims to provide a link between the brewery site and the people of the town by spanning dramatic level changes and industrial ruins across the boundary wall of the brewery itself to a public park on the other side. The design involves a train inspired event-pavilion in a former brewery at Cesis,Latvia. It is seen as both a guiding light and party host. The structure has been made entirely of locally sourced Latvian Pine. In the context of contemporary Indian cities, could it play a role in making our cities more liveable? INQUIRY : The concept of smart cities in India is arising. Considerate amount of capital is being invested in making cities ‘smart’. What do these smart cities claim to do? ISSUE : In the light of the smart city proposals, our cities are being retrofitted with smart infrastructure. These infrastructures helps us monitor and program our cities efficiently to increase our liveability quotient. Our cities claim to engage the citizens with the seams and structures of the city by making smart data public. But is this engagement on the surface? How can a deeper involvement with the city’s structure and our urban lives be made possible? PROPOSITION : The thesis aims to script public engagement at a neighbourhood level in a chosen city Visakhapatnam, as a demonstration prototype. Through this thesis, it is proposed to transform under-used neighbourhood parks into active social spaces and nodes of engagement for the citizens. As rapid urbanization proceeds, these parks ensure that our cities don’t run out of places for us to meet, gather and relax close to nature. Local goals are neighborhood-specific goals which depend on the needs of each locality. As parks are not maintained properly, there is a growing lack of spaces for urban dwellers to meet and relax. Environmental Education The chosen site is a quarry located in Bettahalsoor, Bangalore. The quarry usage dates back to the 1930s. Extensive quarrying led to the migration of people from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Tamil Nadu in and around the quarry. The construction of the Bangalore-Hyderabad Highway was commisioned in 2009. But shockwaves from the quarrying affected the foundations of the highway which led to the closing of the quarry in 2013. The workshop aimed to collectively reflect about new forms of multi-species coexistence, engaging with urban natural/artificial spaces, through fiction and storytelling techniques. It began with an exercise in studying animals along the water edge in Visakhapatnam’s beach. By using Photogrammetry, the rock-habitats of snails and crustaceans have been digitized. A commentary about their habitats is raised by modeling a trash island that sweeps into the city. A compressed plastic waste rock syatem is then proposed to deal with the plastic waste. The rocks are sealed and coated with sand and rock mixtures to mimic the now polluted natural habitats of the sea animals. The combined model from the workshop participants has been built in Blender and a virtual reality walkthrough has been done using the Sansar engine. A narrative about a ‘trash island’ that sweeps into the city has been created. By using this premise, plastic rocks of the future have been modelled and developed. This is an exercise in using sepculative storytelling to explore new synthetic habitats for species. My parents purchased a fifteen year old building with plans to demolish it and build a new structure. After identifying the structural strength of the building, we decided to demolish only the non-load bearing walls and accommodate their needs in the top two floors. Minimal interior changes have been done to the bottom two floors and are rented out as two individual units. The top two floors have been converted into a single duplex unit with access to a private terrace. The flooring, ceilings and all interior finishes have been redone as per design.
